Recombinant human galectin-8 (rhGal-8) is a laboratory-produced version of the human galectin-8 protein, which belongs to the tandem-repeat galectin family. It is characterized by two carbohydrate-recognition domains that specifically bind to i-linear poly-N-acetyllactosamines (poly-LacNAc) on cell surfaces. In the context of cancer research, rhGal-8 is used as a research reagent to investigate the molecular mechanisms of tumor cell adhesion and metastasis. Studies have demonstrated that rhGal-8 can bridge melanoma cells to the vascular endothelium, thereby facilitating systemic dissemination. While rhGal-8 is primarily a research tool, the Gal-8/poly-LacNAc axis is being explored as a potential therapeutic target for the development of anti-metastatic agents.
