Overview

Recombinant human hemoglobin rHb1.1 is a genetically engineered human hemoglobin developed as a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (HBOC) for use as a blood substitute. It is a first-generation recombinant hemoglobin solution with a nitric oxide (NO) scavenging rate similar to that of native human hemoglobin. rHb1.1 selectively inhibits vasorelaxation mediated by nitric oxide by binding NO in the vasculature, leading to the attenuation of NO-donor vasodilator effects. Its mechanism of action can result in increased pulmonary and systemic vasoconstriction and transient increases in blood pressure. Preclinical and early clinical studies demonstrated its intended use for transfusion and oxygen delivery in surgical and trauma settings, with observed effects including transient hypertension and mild increases in pancreatic enzymes, but no serious adverse events[1][2][3][5].
