Overview

Recombinant human interferon alpha-1b is a type I interferon produced via recombinant DNA technology, typically in Escherichia coli. It is a non-glycosylated polypeptide of approximately 166–167 amino acids and about 19.5 kDa in size[3][10]. This cytokine exerts antiviral, immunomodulatory, and antiproliferative effects by binding to the type I interferon receptor (IFNAR), stimulating downstream signaling pathways that induce the expression of numerous antiviral proteins and immune response genes[4][7]. Recombinant human interferon alpha-1b has demonstrated significant antiviral activity against various viruses including SARS-CoV‑2 in vitro, with potential for clinical use in infectious diseases such as COVID‑19[4]. It also displays anti-tumor properties by regulating cell growth and proliferation, making it relevant for certain cancers[1][5]. The drug has been approved for use (notably in China) primarily for viral infections and eye infections; ongoing research explores its broader therapeutic applications[7].
