Recombinant human interferon-beta variants are a collection of engineered protein therapeutics developed by Heligenics as 'biobetters' for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) and other autoimmune diseases. These variants are identified using the company's GigaAssay platform, which screens a comprehensive library of interferon-beta (IFN-β) mutations to find candidates with improved pharmacological properties, such as increased potency or reduced immunogenicity. The variants act as agonists of the interferon alpha/beta receptor (IFNAR), mimicking the natural cytokine's role in modulating the immune system and reducing neuroinflammation. The program, which includes a lead candidate designated as 'Biobetter A', is currently undergoing IND-enabling studies.
