Recombinant human mannose binding lectin (rhMBL) is a protein therapeutic developed for the prevention and treatment of severe infections in individuals with low levels of endogenous mannose-binding lectin (MBL)[2][3]. MBL is a soluble pattern recognition receptor that plays a key role in innate immune defense by binding to carbohydrate structures on pathogens, thereby activating the lectin pathway of the complement system[1][4][5]. This activation leads to opsonization and enhanced clearance of pathogens. Recombinant forms are produced using mammalian cell expression systems and are structurally similar or identical to natural MBL. Clinical studies have shown that administration of rhMBL restores complement activation capacity without significant safety concerns or immunogenicity[3]. The drug has been investigated primarily for use in MBL-deficient patients at increased risk for infection, such as those undergoing chemotherapy-induced neutropenia[3]. Development was led by Enzon and NatImmune[2][8].
