Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Recombinant human NELL-1 protein (rhNELL-1) is a novel osteoinductive growth factor that plays a crucial role in bone formation and skeletal development. Originally discovered by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the Forsyth Institute, NELL-1 is a matricellular signaling protein that promotes osteoblast differentiation and bone mineralization while inhibiting adipogenesis (the formation of fat cells). Unlike bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), NELL-1 acts later in the bone healing cascade, offering a more targeted bone regeneration profile with a lower risk of inflammation or ectopic bone formation. Bone Biologics is developing rhNELL-1 as part of its lead product candidate, NB1 (which combines rhNELL-1 with demineralized bone matrix), for spinal fusion in patients with degenerative disc disease. Additionally, NellOne Therapeutics is developing NELL-1 variants (such as NV1) for soft tissue regeneration, including cardiac and lung tissue repair.
