Overview

Recombinant human papillomavirus 9-valent vaccine is a non-infectious, recombinant vaccine designed to protect against nine types of human papillomavirus (HPV): types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58. The vaccine is composed of purified virus-like particles (VLPs) formed from the major capsid protein L1 of each HPV type. These VLPs are produced using recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cells and self-assemble to mimic the structure of natural HPV virions without containing viral DNA or causing infection[8][6]. The primary mechanism involves stimulating the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies that prevent initial infection by binding to the virus and blocking its entry into host cells[1][7]. Gardasil 9 is indicated for prevention of cervical, vulvar, vaginal and anal cancers; cervical adenocarcinoma; precancerous or dysplastic lesions; and genital warts caused by these nine HPV types[6][7]. The developer and manufacturer is Merck Sharp & Dohme LLC.
