Overview

Recombinant human plasminogen is a recombinant protein therapeutic being developed by Weiguang Biological Products for the treatment of plasminogen deficiency. As a recombinant version of the endogenous human plasminogen protein, it serves as an enzyme replacement therapy. Plasminogen is the zymogen precursor of plasmin, the primary enzyme responsible for fibrinolysis (the dissolution of fibrin clots). In patients with congenital plasminogen deficiency, the lack of functional plasmin leads to the accumulation of fibrin-rich woody (ligneous) lesions on mucous membranes, most commonly the conjunctiva. By providing an exogenous source of the protein, this candidate aims to restore normal fibrinolytic activity and resolve or prevent these lesions. The program was identified through patent disclosures and R&D stage mentions by the sponsor.
