Overview

Recombinant human resistin is a protein therapeutic candidate being investigated for its potential to enhance the anti-tumor activity of macrophages in malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Resistin, a cysteine-rich secretory protein also known as RETN or FIZZ3, is traditionally characterized as an adipokine linked to inflammation and insulin resistance. However, recent research indicates that it plays a critical role in the immunoediting activity of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs). In preclinical models, recombinant human resistin has been shown to improve the cytotoxic killing activity of macrophages against mesothelioma cells, particularly those shaped by the suppressive environment of pleural effusions. This suggests a potential therapeutic application in restoring immune surveillance within the tumor microenvironment by overcoming inhibitory synapses and promoting macrophage-mediated oxeiptosis.
