Overview

Recombinant human serum albumin (rHA) is a genetically engineered form of the most abundant protein in human plasma—human serum albumin. Unlike plasma-derived HSA, rHA is produced using biotechnological methods such as yeast or plant-based expression systems to ensure high purity and batch-to-batch consistency while eliminating risks associated with blood-borne pathogens[3][5][6][8]. Its primary clinical use mirrors that of plasma-derived HSA: maintaining colloid oncotic pressure and increasing circulating plasma volume in conditions like hypovolemia and hypoalbuminemia[1][2]. In addition to direct therapeutic applications for critical illnesses such as cirrhosis and sepsis[4], rHA serves as a stabilizer in the formulation of vaccines, biologics, cell therapies, drug delivery systems, and medical device coatings[3][5][8]. It also supports cell growth in culture media by transporting nutrients and providing mechanical protection for cells[6][8]. The mechanism of action is primarily through its physiological role as a carrier protein that maintains oncotic pressure and binds various endogenous/exogenous ligands.
