Rice-derived recombinant human serum albumin (OsrHSA) is a plant-expressed version of human serum albumin, developed to provide a safe and sustainable alternative to plasma-derived albumin. Produced using a rice seed-based expression platform (Oryza sativa), OsrHSA is biochemically and structurally identical to human plasma-derived albumin (pHSA). It functions as a plasma volume expander and a carrier protein for various substances in the blood, maintaining colloid osmotic pressure. The primary clinical application is the treatment of hypoalbuminemia, particularly in patients with liver cirrhosis or those undergoing surgery like hepatectomy. By using a plant-based production system, it eliminates the risk of human viral contamination (e.g., HIV, Hepatitis) and addresses supply shortages associated with blood donation.
