Recombinant human superoxide dismutase (rhSOD) is a biotechnologically produced version of the endogenous antioxidant enzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. By neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during ionizing radiation, rhSOD protects healthy tissues from oxidative stress and subsequent inflammatory damage. It is currently being investigated in Phase 3 clinical trials, primarily led by Peking University Cancer Hospital, for the prevention and treatment of radiation-induced mucosal injuries. These include acute rectal injury (proctitis) and vaginal mucosal injury in patients undergoing concurrent chemoradiotherapy for cervical cancer. The drug is typically administered locally via enema or vaginal douching to provide site-specific protection.
