Recombinant human type III collagen is a bioengineered protein that is structurally and functionally identical to native human type III collagen. It is produced by expressing the gene encoding the proalpha1 (III) chain in hosts such as Pichia pastoris yeast. This recombinant form avoids risks associated with animal-derived collagens—such as immunogenicity and pathogen transmission—and offers high purity and batch consistency[2][4][8]. Mechanistically, it can be taken up by fibroblasts where it promotes endogenous synthesis of natural type III collagen more than type I collagen, thereby reducing the ratio of type I/III collagens. This shift has been shown to improve hypertrophic scarring and support tissue regeneration[1][5]. Recombinant human type III collagen also supports cell proliferation and extracellular matrix replenishment; it has applications in dermatology (e.g., dermal fillers for wrinkle correction), wound healing, aesthetics (skin rejuvenation), rheumatology, ophthalmology, microneedles for drug delivery systems, and regenerative medicine[6][7][8][10].
