Overview

Recombinant human urokinase (rhUK) is a thrombolytic agent produced using recombinant DNA technology. It is a serine protease that directly converts the zymogen plasminogen into the active enzyme plasmin, which subsequently degrades fibrin clots in the vasculature. Unlike recombinant human pro-urokinase (rhpro-UK), which is a single-chain precursor requiring activation, rhUK is the active two-chain form of the enzyme. It is primarily being investigated in China for the treatment of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) to achieve rapid coronary artery recanalization. Clinical development has been significantly led by the Second Hospital Affiliated to Tianjin Medical University, with trials evaluating its efficacy and safety profile in comparison to other thrombolytics such as alteplase and urine-derived urokinase.
