Overview

Recombinant humanized collagen XVII is a synthetic form of the transmembrane protein collagen type XVII (COL17A1), which is a key component of hemidesmosomes in epithelial tissues. It plays an essential role in maintaining skin integrity by linking the cytoskeleton to the basement membrane and mediating epidermal–dermal attachment[1][8]. Recombinant forms are produced using synthetic biology techniques to provide high biocompatibility and reduce immunogenicity compared to animal-derived collagens[6]. Mechanistically, recombinant humanized collagen XVII enhances keratinocyte migration and adhesion, upregulates extracellular matrix components (such as laminin-332, integrins α3/β1 and β1), promotes cell proliferation, accelerates tissue healing (including oral ulcers), protects against UV-induced damage by inhibiting phosphorylation in MAPK and Wnt signaling pathways (notably p38 and c-Jun), inhibits EGFR/MAPK/AP-1 signaling to delay skin aging/photoaging, activates TGF-β signaling for tissue repair/regeneration[1][3][4][8]. It has broad potential applications in wound healing, anti-aging/cosmetic products, stroma regeneration/tissue engineering biomaterials including hydrogels/scaffolds for skin or corneal repair[6].
