Recombinant insulin-like growth factor 2 (rIGF2) is a protein-based therapeutic candidate being investigated for its neuroprotective and immunomodulatory effects in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson's disease. It functions by activating IGF2 signaling pathways, which have been shown to reduce proinflammatory markers (such as TLR4), prevent mitochondrial dysfunction, and inhibit cell death induced by misfolded alpha-synuclein. In preclinical research, rIGF2 is used to reprogram macrophages, which are then adoptively transferred to mitigate neuroinflammation and motor deficits. This approach aims to address the chronic inflammatory response and dopaminergic neuron loss characteristic of Parkinson's disease.
