Overview
Recombinant IL-6 (rhIL-6) is a laboratory-produced form of the naturally occurring human cytokine interleukin-6. It is a pleiotropic cytokine that plays a critical role in inflammation, hematopoiesis, and immune regulation. Mechanistically, rhIL-6 binds to the IL-6 receptor (IL-6R/gp80), which then recruits the signal-transducing protein gp130 to form a signaling complex. This activates downstream Janus kinase (JAK) and Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (STAT) pathways, particularly STAT3. While primarily utilized as a research reagent by companies like Bio-Techne and InvivoGen, it has been clinically investigated for its potential antitumor effects in metastatic renal cell carcinoma, though it demonstrated limited efficacy in that setting.
