Overview

Recombinant influenza hemagglutinin (H5N1) is a protein antigen derived from the highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus subtype H5N1. Hemagglutinin (HA) is a major surface glycoprotein of the influenza virus responsible for binding to sialic acid-containing receptors on host cells, which is a critical step for viral entry and infection. As a vaccine component, recombinant H5N1 hemagglutinin functions by presenting this viral protein to the immune system, thereby stimulating the production of neutralizing antibodies. These antibodies are designed to block the HA protein's ability to bind to host cells and neutralize virus infectivity, providing protection against H5N1 influenza infection. This recombinant protein is often produced using various expression systems, including insect cells (baculovirus system), HEK293 cells, or plant systems, offering advantages such as faster production and independence from pathogenic viruses compared to traditional egg-based vaccine manufacturing. It is a crucial component in the development of vaccines for pandemic preparedness against avian influenza.
