Overview

Recombinant interferon alpha-1b is a type I interferon cytokine that possesses antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory activities. It is a recombinant protein typically produced in *Escherichia coli* that mimics the naturally occurring human interferon alpha-1b subtype. The drug exerts its biological effects by binding to the heterodimeric Type I interferon receptor (IFNAR), which consists of IFNAR1 and IFNAR2 subunits. This binding activates the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, leading to the nuclear translocation of transcription factors and the subsequent expression of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs). In the context of oncology, specifically clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), it is utilized to enhance the host's immune response against tumor cells and directly inhibit tumor cell growth. The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center sponsored a Phase II clinical trial (NCT00003810) to evaluate the objective response rate of this specific interferon subtype in patients with metastatic clear cell renal carcinoma.
