Recombinant interleukin-19 (rIL-19) is an experimental biologic agent and cytokine belonging to the IL-10 family. It functions as an agonist for the IL-20 receptor complexes, which are heterodimers composed of the IL-20 receptor subunit beta (IL-20RB) paired with either the IL-20 receptor subunit alpha (IL-20RA) or the interleukin-22 receptor subunit alpha 1 (IL-22RA1). Upon binding, rIL-19 activates the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, particularly STAT3. Preclinical research has demonstrated that rIL-19 possesses potent anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, and anti-proliferative properties. It has been studied in mouse models for its ability to suppress abdominal aortic aneurysm progression and attenuate intimal hyperplasia. In respiratory research, rIL-19 has been shown to promote airway epithelial repair under normal conditions, though its role appears dysregulated in the context of cigarette smoke exposure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Currently, rIL-19 is utilized primarily as a research tool and is not associated with a commercial developer or approved clinical indications.
