Recombinant interleukin-20 (rIL-20) is a synthetic form of the IL-20 cytokine, a member of the IL-10 family. It acts as an agonist that signals through two distinct heterodimeric receptor complexes: the Type I receptor (composed of IL-20RA and IL-20RB) and the Type II receptor (composed of IL-22RA1 and IL-20RB). IL-20 is primarily involved in regulating epithelial cell functions, including proliferation, differentiation, and tissue repair, particularly in the skin and respiratory tract. While it plays a physiological role in wound healing, its dysregulation is implicated in inflammatory pathologies such as psoriasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In research settings, recombinant IL-20 is used to study its effects on epithelial barrier integrity and its potential as a biomarker or therapeutic target in chronic inflammatory diseases.
