Overview

Recombinant irisin is a laboratory-produced version of the muscle-derived hormone irisin, which is naturally released into the circulation during physical exercise. Irisin is the cleaved extracellular fragment of the transmembrane protein fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 (FNDC5). In preclinical models of ischemic stroke, recombinant irisin has demonstrated neuroprotective effects by attenuating neuroinflammation. Its mechanism involves the suppression of inflammasome assembly—specifically reducing levels of apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain (ASC) and caspase-1—and the modulation of microglial phenotypes from a pro-inflammatory amoeboid state to a more ramified, homeostatic state. While primarily used as a research reagent, it is being investigated for its potential therapeutic applications in metabolic and neurological disorders.
