Overview

Recombinant lipocalin-2 is a recombinant form of the human protein lipocalin-2 (LCN2/NGAL), an iron-sequestering glycoprotein of the lipocalin family. It primarily acts as an **antibacterial agent** by binding iron-carrying siderophores such as enterobactin, thereby inhibiting bacterial growth. Recombinant LCN2 has demonstrated efficacy in reducing bacterial contamination in platelet products, acting as a potent bacteriostatic agent. Beyond its antibacterial effects, lipocalin-2 has been shown to modulate inflammation, protect against oxidative stress, and participate in tissue injury response—including renal and retinal injury—via regulation of NF-κB signaling and induction of antioxidant defense in cells. It is under preclinical and research use for these activities. Recombinant lipocalin-2 is produced in eukaryotic or bacterial expression systems and studied for prevention of platelet product contamination and as a research tool in inflammation, infection, and tissue injury models[1][3][5][9].
