Recombinant mouse fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a recombinant form of the murine hormone FGF23, which is primarily produced by osteocytes and osteoblasts. It acts as a key regulator of phosphate and vitamin D metabolism. FGF23 exerts its biological effects by binding to and activating fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs), specifically FGFR1, FGFR3, and FGFR4. In the presence of its obligate co-receptor alpha-Klotho, it promotes phosphate excretion in the kidneys. In research settings, exogenous administration of recombinant mouse FGF23 is used to investigate its role in systemic pathologies, including chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular complications. Evidence suggests that elevated FGF23 levels can directly induce cardiac hypertrophy and exacerbate cardiac fibrosis, potentially through Klotho-independent FGFR signaling and the activation of the TGF-beta pathway.
