Recombinant mussel mucin is a genetically engineered protein biomaterial inspired by the natural adhesive proteins (mucins) found in marine mussels. It is typically produced using microbial expression systems such as *Pichia pastoris* or *Escherichia coli*, and consists of key peptide segments from native mussel foot proteins (e.g., Mfp-3, preCol-P). The resulting recombinant protein exhibits high purity and content of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA), a critical amino acid for adhesion and bioactivity[1][9]. Recombinant mussel mucin has demonstrated significant promotion of wound healing by enhancing fibroblast proliferation and migration at the cellular level and accelerating skin repair in animal models[1]. It also shows promise as an antimicrobial dressing for chronic inflammatory skin diseases due to its durable adhesion properties and ability to inhibit bacteria-induced toll-like receptor signaling[6]. Medical dressings based on this material are used for superficial non-chronic wounds, oral ulcers, compromised skin barriers, and potentially other tissue repair applications[2][4][10].
