recombinant Neisseria meningitidis group B factor H binding protein fusion protein is an experimental vaccine candidate developed by Universiteit Gent for the prevention of invasive meningococcal disease caused by serogroup B. The vaccine utilizes a novel bivalent fusion protein approach, where two distinct variants of the factor H binding protein (fHbp)—a key virulence factor that enables the bacteria to evade the host's alternative complement pathway—are genetically linked into a single polypeptide chain. This fusion protein is typically expressed in the yeast *Pichia pastoris*, offering a potentially more efficient and cost-effective manufacturing process compared to traditional multi-component vaccines. By presenting antigens from both major fHbp subfamilies (A and B), the vaccine aims to elicit a broad spectrum of bactericidal antibodies capable of neutralizing diverse MenB strains. It is formulated with an aluminum-based adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity.
