The recombinant neisseria meningitidis group b fhbp fusion protein is a key antigenic component of the multicomponent meningococcal serogroup B vaccine, Bexsero (also known as MenB-4C), developed by GSK (formerly Novartis). This specific protein is a recombinant fusion of the Neisseria meningitidis factor H binding protein (fHBP) variant 1.1 and the accessory protein GNA2091, which was identified through reverse vaccinology to enhance the expression and stability of the antigen. fHBP is a surface-exposed lipoprotein that allows the bacterium to evade the host's immune system by binding human factor H, a negative regulator of the alternative complement pathway. By inducing high titers of serum bactericidal antibodies (hSBA), this vaccine component prevents the pathogen from recruiting factor H and facilitates complement-mediated lysis. It is indicated for the prevention of invasive meningococcal disease caused by serogroup B strains.
