Recombinant Neisseria meningitidis group B NHBA fusion protein is a key antigenic component of the multicomponent meningococcal serogroup B vaccine, Bexsero, developed by GSK. It is a recombinant protein consisting of the Neisseria Heparin Binding Antigen (NHBA) fused to the accessory protein GNA1030. NHBA is a surface-exposed lipoprotein found in almost all strains of Neisseria meningitidis. It binds heparin, which may increase the bacterium's resistance to serum complement-mediated killing. By including this fusion protein in the vaccine, the immune system is trained to produce bactericidal antibodies that recognize and target NHBA on the surface of the bacteria, thereby facilitating their destruction and providing protection against invasive meningococcal disease caused by serogroup B.
