Recombinant oxalate decarboxylase is an enzymatic therapeutic candidate developed by Wuhan Kangfude Urological Calculi Research Institute for the treatment of hyperoxaluria. The drug consists of the enzyme oxalate decarboxylase (OxDC), which specifically catalyzes the breakdown of oxalate into formate and carbon dioxide. Administered orally as a powder, the enzyme is designed to degrade oxalate within the gastrointestinal tract, thereby reducing the amount of oxalate available for absorption into the bloodstream. This mechanism aims to lower urinary oxalate excretion, which is a primary risk factor for the formation of calcium oxalate kidney stones and the progression of nephrocalcinosis. It is primarily being investigated for secondary hyperoxaluria, a condition often resulting from increased dietary intake or intestinal malabsorption.
