Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Recombinant parvalbumin is a recombinant form of the calcium-binding protein parvalbumin (Pvalb). In the context of osteoarthritis, parvalbumin acts as an intracellular calcium chelator and mechanotransducer in osteocytes [1.1]. Under excessive mechanical loading, osteocytic parvalbumin is downregulated, leading to intracellular calcium overload, osteocyte apoptosis, and activation of the Ca²⁺-calmodulin-CaMKIV-CREB-RANKL pathway, which drives pathological subchondral bone remodeling and cartilage degeneration [1.1]. Bone-targeted delivery of recombinant parvalbumin has been shown to attenuate these pathological changes in preclinical models of osteoarthritis [1.1]. Additionally, recombinant parvalbumin from fish species (such as carp Cyp c 1 or cod Gad c 1) and its hypoallergenic mutants have been investigated as allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) for the treatment of fish allergy.
