Overview

Recombinant S1 antigen is a protein subunit vaccine candidate developed by Hospital do Coração (HCor) in Brazil for the prevention of COVID-19. The vaccine utilizes the S1 subunit of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which contains the receptor-binding domain (RBD) responsible for mediating viral entry into host cells via the ACE2 receptor. By presenting this specific protein fragment to the immune system, the vaccine aims to elicit a targeted immune response, including the production of neutralizing antibodies. It has been evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials (NCT05142553) as a heterologous booster dose for individuals who have already completed a primary vaccination series with other COVID-19 vaccines, such as CoronaVac, AstraZeneca (ChAdOx1), or Janssen (Ad26.COV2.S).
