Recombinant trivalent poliomyelitis vaccine is a virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine candidate developed by Sinovac Biotech for the prevention of poliomyelitis. The vaccine is produced using a recombinant baculovirus expression system in a rhabdovirus-negative Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf-RVN) insect cell line. It contains VLPs representing poliovirus serotypes 1, 2, and 3, which are structurally similar to the native virus but lack the viral genome, rendering them non-infectious. This recombinant approach is designed to eliminate the risks associated with live-attenuated vaccines, such as vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) and circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses (cVDPV), while providing a safer and more scalable manufacturing process compared to traditional inactivated polio vaccines (IPV).
