Overview

Recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus-expressing interferon-beta (VSV-IFNβ) is an oncolytic virus engineered to express interferon-beta (IFNβ). This modification allows the virus to selectively replicate in and kill cancer cells while sparing normal cells. In tumor cells with defective IFN-β-mediated innate antiviral host defense mechanisms, VSV can replicate without interference, leading to cell lysis. However, in normal cells, the production of recombinant IFN-β activates an antiviral immune response that protects them against viral infection. VSV-IFNβ has demonstrated potent antitumor effects and promotes systemic antitumor immunity. The virus can be administered via intratumoral (IT) and intravenous (IV) routes.
