Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Rectinol ointment is an over-the-counter anorectal topical formulation combining the local anesthetic cinchocaine hydrochloride with the astringent and skin protectant zinc oxide to provide temporary symptomatic relief of pain and itching associated with external and internal haemorrhoids, anal fissures, pruritus ani, and other non-infective anorectal inflammatory conditions.[1][3][7][13] Cinchocaine blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in peripheral nerves to reduce nociceptive signal conduction and numb the affected area, while zinc oxide forms a protective barrier, exerts mild antiseptic and astringent effects, and soothes irritated perianal skin.[1][3][4][7] The product is supplied primarily in 50 g tubes with an applicator for both external perianal and low rectal internal application, and is registered as a pharmacy medicine in Australia for short-term symptomatic management rather than disease modification.[1][3][7][11][13]
