Overview

Red bahman is a traditional medicinal root derived from the plant *Salvia haematodes* L., primarily utilized in Iranian Traditional Medicine (ITM) for its purported aphrodisiac, tonic, and spermatogenic properties. It is traditionally prescribed to treat male sexual dysfunction and infertility. Clinical research, such as studies conducted at the Royan Institute, investigates its efficacy in improving semen parameters—including sperm concentration, motility, and morphology—and modulating reproductive hormones like testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in men with idiopathic oligospermia. While its exact molecular mechanism remains under investigation, it is hypothesized to exert antioxidant effects and influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, thereby protecting sperm DNA from oxidative damage and enhancing hormonal drivers of spermatogenesis.
