Overview

Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion is a standard medical procedure involving the intravenous administration of concentrated erythrocytes to restore oxygen-carrying capacity in patients with severe anemia or chronic hematologic disorders. In the context of the RBC-IMPACT (Red Blood Cell - IMProving trAnsfusions for Chronically Transfused Recipients) study led by Westat, researchers are investigating how various donor, component, and recipient factors influence the efficacy and survival of transfused RBCs. This observational cohort study specifically targets populations requiring frequent transfusions, such as those with sickle cell disease, thalassemia, or pediatric cancers. The research aims to identify genetic and non-genetic markers in both donors and recipients that may optimize transfusion outcomes, improve RBC survival post-transfusion, and mitigate complications like alloimmunization.
