Overview

This clinical research intervention involves the transfusion of packed red blood cells (PRBCs) to anemic patients (hemoglobin <10 g/dL) who have suffered an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Conducted by the Washington University School of Medicine, the study (NCT00968227) investigates the therapeutic potential of RBC transfusion to improve cerebral oxygen delivery (DO2) and brain metabolism. By increasing the concentration of hemoglobin and the arterial oxygen content, the intervention aims to prevent or reverse delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), a common complication of SAH where reduced blood flow leads to secondary brain injury. The research specifically utilizes PET imaging to measure changes in the oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) and regional cerebral blood flow following the administration of approximately one unit of PRBCs.
