Overview

Red blood cells + plasma refers to the combined transfusion or administration of two major blood components—red blood cells (RBCs) and plasma. This combination is not a single pharmaceutical product but rather a therapeutic approach used in clinical settings, especially for patients experiencing significant hemorrhage, trauma, or coagulopathy. Red blood cells are responsible for restoring oxygen-carrying capacity and treating anemia or acute bleeding by increasing hemoglobin levels[2][3][6]. Plasma contains essential clotting factors and proteins that help restore coagulation function in patients with deficiencies, active bleeding, or those requiring reversal of anticoagulation[2][3][4][6]. The combination is often used in massive transfusion protocols to simultaneously address both oxygen delivery (via RBCs) and hemostasis (via plasma). Both components are administered intravenously.
