Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Red Bull is a commercially available energy drink that was investigated by the Université de Montréal for its physiological effects on the eye. The beverage contains active ingredients including caffeine, taurine, B-group vitamins, and sugars. In a randomized crossover trial, researchers observed that consumption of 250 ml of Red Bull led to a significant decrease in blood oxygenation within the optic nerve capillaries, suggesting a vasoconstrictor effect. This response is primarily attributed to caffeine, which acts as an adenosine receptor antagonist. The study aimed to understand how energy drinks might influence ocular blood flow and intraocular pressure in healthy individuals.
