Red clover extract is derived from the flowers and leaves of the plant Trifolium pratense. It is primarily used as a dietary supplement for its high content of isoflavones—phytoestrogens that can mimic estrogen in the body. Traditionally, red clover has been used as a sedative and to treat respiratory conditions and skin disorders such as psoriasis and eczema. Modern uses focus on alleviating menopausal symptoms (such as hot flashes), mastalgia (breast pain), premenstrual syndrome, osteoporosis prevention/treatment support, cardiovascular health (cholesterol reduction), and various skin conditions. The mechanism of action is mainly attributed to its phytoestrogenic activity via binding to estrogen receptors due to compounds like biochanin A, formononetin, genistein, and daidzein[1][2][4][5]. There is no robust clinical evidence supporting efficacy for most indications; safety concerns exist regarding use in hormone-sensitive conditions due to its estrogenic effects[2].
