Overview

**Red clover isoflavones** are a variable botanical dietary-supplement preparation derived from *Trifolium pratense*. The principal phytoestrogenic constituents are typically biochanin A and formononetin, with smaller and variable amounts of genistein, daidzein, and related isoflavones. These constituents and their metabolites can interact with estrogen receptors, producing weak and tissue-dependent estrogenic activity. In a randomized double-blind crossover study, approximately 50 mg/day of red clover isoflavones for four weeks lowered daytime ambulatory blood pressure and improved an indirect measure of basal endothelial nitric oxide activity in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes. This is a nutraceutical mixture rather than a single standardized pharmaceutical active ingredient; composition, dose, bioavailability, and clinical effects vary across products.
