Red okra extract is a botanical extract derived from the red variety of *Abelmoschus esculentus* L. Moench. It is primarily investigated for its potential in managing obesity and associated metabolic dysfunctions, such as dyslipidemia and hepatic steatosis. The extract functions through a dual mechanism: it possesses a high fat-binding capacity that inhibits the intestinal absorption of dietary fats and activates the 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway. Activation of AMPKα leads to the upregulation of key metabolic regulators, including adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) and hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) for lipolysis, uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) and PGC1α for thermogenesis, and PPARα, CPT1, and ACOX1 for fatty acid oxidation. Preclinical studies in high-fat diet-induced obese mouse models have demonstrated that red okra extract can significantly reduce body weight gain, improve serum lipid profiles, and alleviate hepatic steatosis.
