Overview

Red wine polyphenol extract is a mixture derived from the skins, seeds, and stems of red grapes (Vitis vinifera), standardized to contain high levels of polyphenolic compounds characteristic of red wine. Its main active constituents include flavanols (e.g., catechin, epicatechin), proanthocyanidins, flavonols (e.g., quercetin, myricetin), anthocyanins, and resveratrol. The extract exhibits potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective properties. Mechanistically, it enhances endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity, increasing nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability, which contributes to improved vascular function and cardioprotection. Red wine polyphenol extract may also modulate kinase pathways (such as MAPK) and transcription factors (such as NFκB), resulting in anti-proliferative and anti-cancer effects. It is primarily investigated as a dietary supplement for cardiovascular health, metabolic syndrome, and as an adjunctive cancer-preventive agent[1][2][3][5][7].
