Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Refresh Contacts is an over-the-counter (OTC) lubricant eye drop formulation developed by Allergan (now part of AbbVie) specifically for contact lens wearers. The active ingredient is carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC), a viscosity-enhancing polymer that acts as an artificial tear to provide relief from dryness, irritation, and discomfort associated with wearing contact lenses. It is designed to be applied directly to the eye while lenses are in place, helping to rewet the lenses and stabilize the tear film. The formulation often includes the Purite preservative system, which breaks down into natural tear components upon exposure to light, minimizing potential ocular surface irritation.
