Overview
Refresh Optive Mega-3 (OM3) is a preservative-free, lipid-based nano-emulsion artificial tear developed by Allergan (now AbbVie) in collaboration with the University of New South Wales. Designed specifically for the treatment of dry eye disease, including evaporative dry eye (EDE), the formulation reinforces the lipid layer of the tear film to reduce evaporation and provides osmoprotection to the ocular surface. Its active components include omega-3 fatty acids sourced from flaxseed oil, castor oil, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), and glycerin. Additionally, it contains the osmoprotectants levocarnitine, erythritol, and trehalose, which help protect corneal epithelial cells from hyperosmotic stress. The nano-emulsion modality allows for a small droplet size, enhancing the stability and distribution of the lipid components across the tear film.
