Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Refresh Optive UD (Unit Dose) is a preservative-free, topical ophthalmic solution indicated for the temporary relief of burning, irritation, and discomfort due to dry eye disease or exposure to environmental factors. Developed by Allergan (now part of AbbVie), the formulation features a dual-action approach combining carboxymethylcellulose sodium (0.5%) and glycerin (0.9%). Carboxymethylcellulose acts as a mucomimetic lubricant that stabilizes the tear film and binds to corneal epithelial cells to provide prolonged relief, while glycerin serves as an osmoprotectant that helps protect the ocular surface from hyperosmotic stress. As a unit-dose product, it is packaged in single-use vials to ensure sterility without the need for preservatives, making it suitable for patients with sensitive eyes or those requiring frequent application. In clinical research, it is frequently utilized as a standard-of-care comparator in Phase 3 trials for novel artificial tear formulations, such as ABBV-444.
