Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Refresh Plus is a preservative-free ophthalmic lubricant developed by Allergan (now AbbVie) for the treatment of dry eye disease and ocular irritation. Its active ingredient is carboxymethylcellulose sodium (0.5%), a cellulose derivative that functions as a viscosity-increasing agent. It works by stabilizing the tear film and increasing the residence time of moisture on the ocular surface, thereby providing relief from symptoms such as burning, stinging, and foreign body sensation. Because it is preservative-free and supplied in single-use containers, it is often recommended for patients with moderate-to-severe dry eye, those who are sensitive to preservatives like benzalkonium chloride, or for use following LASIK surgery.
