Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Refresh Tears Plus is a preserved lubricating eye drop formulation developed by Allergan (an AbbVie company) for the relief of dry eye symptoms and discomfort associated with contact lens wear. The active ingredient is carboxymethylcellulose sodium (carmellose sodium), which acts as an ocular lubricant by coating the corneal epithelium to provide moisture and long-lasting lubrication. The formulation utilizes Purite as an advanced preservative, which is designed to break down into natural tear components upon contact with the eye, minimizing preservative-induced ocular surface toxicity compared to traditional preservatives like benzalkonium chloride (BAK). Refresh Tears Plus has been evaluated in clinical studies, including an exploratory trial in Australia investigating its effects on corneal epithelial cell shedding.
