REG-001 is a small molecule therapeutic candidate being developed by Regenica Biosciences as an antidote for organophosphate poisoning, including exposure to chemical nerve agents and insecticides. Developed by scientific founders including Nobel laureate Barry Sharpless and Palmer Taylor, the drug is specifically engineered to cross the blood-brain barrier, a significant improvement over current standard-of-care treatments like pralidoxime (2-PAM) which have limited central nervous system penetration. By reaching the brain, REG-001 can reactivate acetylcholinesterase and prevent the life-threatening seizures and long-term neurological damage typically associated with organophosphate toxicity. The compound was in preclinical development as of 2019.
