Overview

Regadenoson is a selective A2A adenosine receptor agonist used as a pharmacologic stress agent for radionuclide myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) in patients unable to undergo adequate exercise stress. By selectively activating the A2A adenosine receptor on coronary arteries, it induces coronary vasodilation and increases coronary blood flow, allowing for the detection of areas with reduced perfusion due to coronary artery disease. Regadenoson's selectivity results in fewer side effects compared to less selective agents like adenosine. It is administered as a single intravenous bolus and has a rapid onset and short duration of action. The drug was developed by Astellas Pharma and is marketed under the brand names Lexiscan (in the US) and Rapiscan (in Europe), with GE Healthcare also marketing it in some regions[1][2][4][5][7].
